This fortified city is beautifully situated in the green, scenic surroundings of the Lopikerwaard with characteristic pollarded trees, meadows, canals, and rivers. Historical

Oudewater prospered through the rope industry. Hemp for making ropes was cultivated around Oudewater. The hemp was brought to the weighhouse, now known as the Witches’ Weighing House. The city had rope-walks where the hemp was turned into rope. The dye used gave a yellow color, which is why the residents of Oudewater are still called “Geelbuiken.” Rope from Oudewater was used all over the world by the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the navy, and the (herring) fishing industry.
